Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
