Similar to the recent storm tore through the northern region the previous evening, City blew Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three goal victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This result signalled consecutive league losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s ability to manage league and European soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this capability. Sadly for the opposition, they looked weary throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had tried to make changes with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the exclusion of the in-form Malard to the bench caused surprise.

City, in opposition, have no such workload concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from injury.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to build for the United boss and his side from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose energetic offense manipulated and tore United open with a superb opening period performance that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This left the home team in a commanding position and left United struggling. In advance of this fixture, United had conceded just a handful in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the face of City’s attacking flair.

Opening Threats

The omens came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Hemp was at the center of everything in the beginning, taking advantage of the room left by Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had a number of attacks forward, their straightforward approach giving them options in the wings but they could not test the City goalkeeper. City, in the meantime, commanded possession, taunting their opposition and trying to draw them out of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the far post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh header of the season.

They added to their cushion with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Rose was able to advance through the center from central defence, the field became spacious for City. The influential Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before sending a precise ground pass for Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a rapid change in the ball saw Hemp afforded the space to drive a shot home from range.

Second Half

The clearest change came from the United manager at the interval as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came closest, rattling the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and were unable to register a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have added to their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to overcome any side who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a commanding standing after nine matches.
