The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
